There is a phenomenon called “acu-stoned”, in which some patients feel extremely relaxed as a result of their acupuncture. The type of body high that one can feel after, for example, cannabis consumption.
Although not an official term, by any means, acupuncturist Jane Gregorie, LAc, from Denver, explains that “acu-stoned” is just slang for the “feelings of deep relaxation, swing, heavy limbs, euphoria and spaciousness” they experience. some people during or after a session.
Los Angeles-based acupuncturist Russell Brown, L.Ac, MTOM, on the other hand, actually wants to refer to emotion as “wonderful disorientation.” He says that because acupuncture frees the mind, “it can not be oriented in time and space, so you forget where you are, perhaps thinking that you are in your bedroom and insisting that there is no way it has been just 30 minutes.”
So how exactly does one feel about the “high” or “high disorientation” that can accompany acupuncture? Philadelphia acupuncturist Eva Zeller, LAc, explains that when you do acupuncture, your body releases endorphins.
“My theory is that you usually take endorphins after exercise or injury … but during acupuncture you lie down and relax,” says Zeller, “so these endorphins can take you to a whole different level.” Zeller also points out that there is “some strong evidence that acupuncture has an effect on the endocannabinoid system, just not as severe as those caused by THC.”
While different pressure points (if not all) can trigger this particular atmosphere, Zeller says GB21, the “Vulcan nerve pin” point on the trapezius at the top of the shoulder, is likely to lead to “A particularly strong release of endorphins”. Boston-based acupuncturist Marisa Fanelli, LAc, also credits Heart 7, Pericardium 6, Kidney 1 and Spleen 6, which “seem to cause this feeling more consistently.”
Although, as Brown notes, “There are no universal rules that apply to everyone. “Everything is so specific to the patient, so the points that may really work for you may not be what work for me.” This is because, just like falling, the effects of acupuncture affect everyone differently.
Fanelli says she finds that the patients who are most likely to develop acupuncture “are those who are committed to enjoying the acupuncture experience”. These are patients who “want to relax and unwind from their stress and anxiety,” he says. However, as Brown points out, there are many reasons why a patient may or may not feel like they are floating through acupuncture. This may include, he explains, “the patient’s level of confidence, [their] comfort and safety with clinical experience and the physician, the patient’s general level of anxiety around the needles and the body … the patient’s caffeine intake before treatment and at the time of day. “
Sometimes it takes a few visits to show the feeling of the stone, probably because people are more careful during a new experience, Zeller says, adding that some people get very sharp stones for the first time.
“The positive results [of acupuncture] “It can take hours,” says Gregorie. But these “zoned” feelings usually weaken a little earlier, he explains.
However, even if your tremors only last a few minutes, Zeller recommends that patients sit in the waiting room after treatment until they feel down enough to drive or walk home. “Drinking a glass of water also helps,” he says. Gregorie adds that this is because some patients may feel dizzy as a result of acupuncture. “So they have to be careful when they get up and they have to do it slowly,” he recommends.
The great thing is that, whether you are bothered or not, if you are in the hands of trustworthy people and allow him to do what he does best, you will leave feeling better. As Gregory points out, “Most people will feel relieved by acupuncture, if not ‘too much’, and will also be relieved of pain, better sleep and improved digestion.” This is because the practice of acupuncture, as Fanelli puts it, “brings your body into a state of equilibrium, which affects every system in the body.”
