For the uninitiated, slugging is a K-beauty practice that involves applying a layer of barrier – such as a thick moisturizer or Vaseline – on top of your other skin care layers before going to bed. This helps your skin lock in moisture and retain the benefits of other beauty products you have applied (such as your moisturizer, hyaluronic acid, retinol — etc.). “The idea is that it will seal all the moisture from your skin and all the good from the products you have used. That way, you will wake up feeling hydrated, nourished,” Weiner explains in the episode.
Slugging is especially good for those with dry skin. “I’m obsessed with using Vaseline as a moisturizer,” Mona Gohara, MD, a Connecticut-certified dermatologist, told Well + Good. “I am using [Vaseline] morning and evening, but I do not relax. I just use small amounts to correct my skin barrier. In small quantities, it rejuvenates and moisturizes the skin to help it glow “.
That said, slugging may not be the best if you are experiencing rosacea or acne. Although Vaseline is not carcinogenic – which means it does not clog your pores – it is still not the best choice for those who tend to be oily. Instead, choose a moisturizer that contains tiles (which Dr. Gohara notes will have a similar effect).
Now, you are ready to try this favorite beauty editor trend. But before you do, make sure you watch the rest of this week’s full episode Life tries everything to listen to Weiner’s complete beauty routine and the unique beauty trend that she says just does not suit her.
